Volvo Repair - 1996 volvo 960 dies as soon as i press the gas

Expert: Roger Patricio - 5/15/2009

Question
I've got  a 1996 volvo 960 with over 200,000 miles on it. I was having problems a while back with it dying whas soon as I pressed the gas, I put some fuel injection cleaner in it and it seemed to help, but I also had taken it in and gotten a new battery and fuel pump.
Then I drove it a few weeks and it quit starting, I took it in and the guy said it was the neutral safety switch. He couldn't get the part after 2 1/2 weeks so he "rigged" it with no guarentee. It does start now, but the next day I went to leave to go to work and as soon as I pressed the gas it died. It's running extreamly rough (it does need a tune up badly.)
I don't know if it's just the fuel line or something in the tank or the alternator or what !?!?
I can't afford to take it in again please help please please can you help me ?

Answer
Leslie, Great. you got some hack to rig the car up.  It sounds like the air mass meter is the problem or a fuel pressure issue.  Either way, the car is going to need to get checked out.  Unfortunately I cant help you from here.  This one I would have to check out the car myself to see whats going on. Roger
