Volvo Repair - a/c 98 volvo s70 non turbo

Question
hi roger,
thanks for taking my question,
I have a 98 Volvo S70, and the problem I'm having is with the a/c,we usually keep it on the Aut control, and it will blow cold, but then it blows out what i think is freon? it will blow it out and you can actaully see it coming out of the vents, then it will stop blowing out the freon, and will blow cold for a few mins longer, then will start blowing hot air, but if you park the car for about 10 mins or so, say to go into a store, when you get back in and start driving again, it will start blowing cold again, and then start to repeat the process, i have noticed that the on/off buttons do flash for a little while when you start the car, but we cant seem to figure out what could cause this, since it still blows cold, but we do notice that if no matter what temp it is set on, it seems to blow super cold, not really what the temp control is set on, i.e. at 72 degrees, it is really blowing at more like 60 degrees all the time, any ideas? and if so can we do the job at home?

Answer
Yolanda, in one word, No. You cant do this at home.  Car needs to be scanned to see which lever motor is giving you issues. As far as blowing cold, then hot, what it needs is a Clutch reshim.  The gap between the A/C clutch and pulley is too far apart, causing it to stop blowing cold.  I would also have the freon pressures checked just in case its low a little.  As far as seeing the freon from the vents, I wouldnt worry about it.  They all do that once and a while.  No need to panic on that one.  Roger
