Volvo Repair/Volvo S80 turn signal lever

You don't need to take apart the calmshell.

To wake up the SWM, remove the 5 amp fuse for the Steering Wheel Module, and reinstall.

You do NOT have to replace the SWM, there is a software update you can do to cure this.

The only time you need to replace it is, if it will not wake up after reinstalling fuse.

I tried this today, I simply pulled out Fuse #21 and Fuse #22, neither of the fuses were out, but pulling them and putting them back in gave the system the kick start it needed.  Now the turn signals are working again.  Thanks, Bri

From my recent experience, this is correct advice.  I read this, went down to the garage, and reinstalled the fuses.  My turn signals, wiper fluid, and brights all came back on.  A dealer would have charged me a ton for this.

Thanks, all.

I tried to remove the #21 fuse first because I thought only the indicators weren't working. Then I realized the whole lever was not functioning. Came to this website, found the answer, went back outside, pulled out both fuses and put them back in. Problem solved. Awesome.

Thanks for the information.  When brights would not work, then could not move thru computer information, and finally turn signals and wheel buttons failed I was ready to call the dealer and be hit with anothere $500 bill.   I am very happy that I searched the web and found all the information.   I removed fuse 21 & 22 and reinstalled and everything is up and running 100%.  Less than 5 minutes saved a big service bill.  Thanks to all.  I now know my first stop when having problems will be a web search.

I also had this problem but it was difficult to remove the green module. I think you can get the same result by temporarily removing the corresponding fuse (for me it was either 21 or 22) , right? That should but the power to the module.  It worked for me at least.

I have a 2000 S80 and was experiencing the same problems.  No turn signals, no high beams, no washer fluid, etc.  I had checked the fuses and didn't find any problems.  After reading your suggestion to pull out fuse 21 and 22 I gave it a try.  Wow!  It all works again.  Thank you, Thank you.  I can't imagine what this saved me in repair costs.

S80 from 2000 lost Cruise Control, radio volume etc. Removing and re-installing 5 Amp. Fuse #22 in the fusebox inside the driver's door fixed this right away! Thank you (a lot).

You guys are GREAT, this solution is still current working, just today the turning indicator problem came up on my S80 (1998), fixed it with the aid of Your hint after a GOOGLE search.

THANK YOU and greetings from Poland!!

You saved me.  I tried removing the 10 Amp fuse (#21) 3 times to check if it was blown and didn't understand what was going on.  I checked every fuse but didn't take the 5 Amp (#22) out until I read this.  I was about to have someone charge me a big bill.

Great answer! I pulled fuses #21 & #22 twice with no luck but I tried for a 3rd time and everything came back. Saved me a 1 hour trip to the dealer and the repair cost.

Malone, did you ever find out what the issue was? I have tried the fuses and replacing the bulb and it still is giving me a bulb failure code and will not work.

Blake Strong.  Thanks Everyone,  I tried to take fuse #21 and #22 myself, and it worked, I was shocked, I am glad I ran found all your comments here.  This site saved me a lot of time and money.  Its funny, buy I visually looked at the fuses and saw that they were good, switched relays around, and my next option was to open the steering cover column and wld have lost a lot of time and today is the superbowl also, GO SF Niners....  you guys, Thanks

Are the fuses removed with the car "on" or off totally?

gyess wrote at 2014-05-02 00:01:17
Tried removing the fuses and let it sit for 5 minutes.   Didn't work.  Trying again.  When removing the fuse (5 amp in slot 23 on a 2003 S80) the car dies if running.  I did this with the car off and removed 23, 22, and 21.   Trying again.   What happened was I took my car for tires and the battery has been suspect.  Upon putting the key the slot the flashers went on like an button was hit upon depositing the only the battery was drained in the AM.  They put in a new battery but the turn indicators, high beams, or anything on that functional stick does not work, nor does the radio.   Help appreciated please.

I just had this happen to my 2010 S80.  I got back in the car after a short stop and the wipers were on.  I tried the stalk and it didn't work.  No washer spray, turn signals or brights either.  I also could not turn on the front or rear fog lamps, change the headlight setting or adjust the dash lighting brightness.

I found this thread, went and pulled 21 and 22 and viola - all works again.

Thanks everyone.

Further to my problem with the turn signals (which I identified earlier today - under June)I looked up Volvo manual online ( for fuses) which showed where the fuses were contained - by the side of the dashboard of the driver side.

I took out fuses 21, 22 & 23 and put them back in again and

VIOLA - it worked.

Thank you everyone who have already contributed to this problem on this website. Its a GREAT help

2007 Volvo XC70 --- if turn signals, high beams, and dash light is dim (plus wipers only operate at one speed) -- I found FUSE 9 (5 AMP) in the driver door panel was blown. Like the others on this thread, book says this is Steering Control. So --- check your manual for location of the correct fuse.
