Question Hi Tim, we usually go to WDW in September, but this year we are going December 12 through December 19. We hear that the crowds are usually low this time of year, but all of the deluxe hotels are booked, and it is still August. Does Disney hold back rooms and release them at a later date? Or is this a bad sign that this year is going to be different and the "no availability" message means that it is going to be very busy?
Answer Hello Jennifer,
Disney World is busier in December than September (even they are both considered Value Resort Seasons). More guests do visit Disney World in December. There are many great special events held at the Disney Theme Parks this time of year, it does attract more visitors. You also get alot of locals that come in during the weekends for the seasonal activities. That is why you are seeing some sold out hotels.
Disney also just released a discount package for these dates, so you are also getting extra visitors due to this discount package. If you are trying to book these dates with this discount package, that could be part of the issue. Disney does only offer a certain amount of rooms at each Disney Resort with this discount package. If your favorite resort is not available, you may want to try to price your trip without the discount promotion. You may have better luck.
There are only two resorts that really have allotments of rooms that may be blocked off and released later. These are the convention hotels at Disney World including Disney's Contemporary Resort and Disney's Yacht & Beach Club Resort. These resorts do hold rooms for conventions (sometimes) and once the dates expire for the group rates, may get released back to the general public.
It is still considered a slower season at the Disney Theme Parks and you will have a wonderful vacation, even though you are seeing some sold out signs. A small portion of the Disney Theme Park business comes from the Disney Resorts. There are lots and lots of other hotels/timeshares/condos around Orlando that bring in visitors to Disney World. The Disney Resorts do not always determine what the Disney Theme Parks will be like during a vacation. This time of year is still considered a slower season for Disney World and is a great time to visit!
Enjoy your trip!
