How to Get What You Want in Life - Can't make up my mind

Expert: Jacky Tustain - 10/28/2009

Question
I'm not sure if you can help me with this but I thought I'd give it a try. I am currently a freshman in high school. Forever my dream was to be the lead CSI of New York City. Now that I am seeing all these other jobs I don't know what I want to do. I have 3 other careers I want to do: surgeon, FBI, and part of the SWAT team.
I don't know how to decide what to do. Later this year I am going to job shadow a surgeon. I think that will give me some idea but not enough. How can I find out if the other careers a more fitting for me? I really don't like not knowing what I want to do.

Answer
Hi Katey,

Isn't it fantastic when several opportunities present themselves and it is hard to choose between them?

Although you are forming your choices now and have little life experience to work on what would be the best choice for you, you have a couple of approaches you can use to help you make up your mind.

The first option (and this is great for when you have to make any choice in your life) is to write down what you want out of the situation, in this case, you would use the potential lifestyle each choice would give you. Think about money, time and your personal values and job satisfaction.

Then list the pros and cons of each career choice. At this point you can compare these lists to your lifestyle lists and you may be able to decide from this. If you are still uncertain consider giving a weighting out of 10 to each pro and con, based on how important you see each aspect is to yourself.

You can then add up the scores for each option to find the most favourable. However, if your instincts disagree with your choice I'd suggest you revisit your lists and scoring to see what you are missing or if you have mis-scored somewhere.

If you are still uncertain or just feel equally as strong about your options you can try a personality assessment such as DISC or Keirsey. These tests analyse your personality style and will give you some idea of the sort of work that would suit you. Talk to as many people as you can, but bear in mind their opinions and experience may still not give you a clear picture and may even confuse you more!
