Question
Hello, please help us a.s.a.p

My boyfriend would love to be working for the WM here in our area ( chicago,IL). He is still in high school, but after we graduate he would love to start doing a job in the WM such as trash collector. We might also be starting a family and he wants to get the job hopefully next year. We have been searching online, with people, in our area, but we can't find anything to guide us through this process. Is there anywhere he can apply or is there a phone number we could possibly call? any kind of information to help us get a start please let us know. This is our future. We really need some help and guidance.

thank you
-LC

Answer
Hi Jessica,

Your boyfriend is smart. People in waste collection can make decent money and move up with experience, because some people are simply not comfortable with waste collection jobs.

I have lived in Chicago and know firsthand that there are many companies active there. One option is to grab the phone book and look in the yellow pages under "rubbish removal" to see what companies are active there. Call and ask for their personnel departments, and when you are connected, ask for instructions on how to apply for a collection position.

It is likely that your boyfriend will need a drivers license suitable for driving collection trucks, as collection has become increasingly automated. Ask what drivers license requirements are whenever you speak to someone from a company.

The big national companies (Waste Management, Inc. and Allied Waste) will have more formal application procedures than smaller independent companies.

It is hard to get good help these days. If your boyfriend is a good worker who doesn't bellyache and shows up on time every single day, he will be on a path to success.

There is currently one waste management listing on Monster.com. This is a site you should watch, because other things will come up. Here's the link:

Anything else? Or is that what you needed?

Thanks,
Nick
