Question
hello       i live in a small community in florida and work in parts field. i have access to a end less supply of old tires. the only place around to discard them is through the county landfill at five bucks a pop.. is there a market for me to pick them up and sell them. i have a truck and trailer.. not much, but i can haul a 100 or so at a time

Answer
Hi Danny,

Thank you for your question.  Tire recycling is a common and effective way of dealing with this ubiquitous material.  Without knowing exactly where you are in Florida, it's difficult for me to give you a specific answer.  Here's what I suggest:

- Contact your local county waste management department.  They should be able to provide you with a listing of tire recycling companies in your area of Florida that will accept tires in bulk loads.

- Some, if not all, of the companies you find are bound to charge for taking your tires, so you will want to find out what these charges are for each facility.  Generally, you can't sell tires, you have to pay to recycle them.

- Check with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.  They operate the WASTE TIRE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM for the state.  Among other things, they regulate the collection of waste tires.  Their website is
http://www.dep.state.fl.us/waste/categories/tires/default.htm

- You could possibly charge to accept tires from others.  You might also consider charging a tire handling fee as part of your wrecking business.  Contact the Florida DEP first though to make sure you comply with any regulations.

- I know of a local company where I live that does what your talking about, but they cull out any good tires and sell them to customers.  Makes okay money from it too.

Hope that helps Danny.  Let me know if I can provide you with any other information.

Rob
