Expert: Steve Young Date: 7/21/2008 Subject: Water softener "repacking"
Question Dear Sir:
I have a "Series 155" water sofenter. I can't find any name brand on it aside from a sticker "Aqua Industries." Recently we began to get orange rust stains on white clothes in the washer. I thought "uh oh I haven't had the unit serviced in a couple of years so I called a guy out. (It recommends in the manual yearly service and recharge of the filter). The guy told my wife that the unit needed to be "repacked" which should be done every 7 or 8 years, and it would cost $475 plus tax. I am writing to inquire if you think this guy is trying to screw me, or if he is being legit and if he is correct, if the amount is appropriate. Thanks!
Answer Hi Steve,
Do you have the manual? If so look and see if it indicates either the capacity of the unit or the volume of resin contained in the unit. I am not familiar with "Aqua Industries" and I have not been able to find out anything on a Series 155 water softener. I do know of a series 155 autotrol valve but it is used on many different softeners.
Replacing the softener resin in the tank is not a difficult task and you can probably do it yourself. I do think $475 is high unless this is a very large softener.
See if you can find out the information I need and let me know. I can then give you a more educated answer. I will wait to hear back from you.
