Expert: Dr V N Sivasankara Pillai - 11/1/2009

Question
Dear Dr.pillai,
i have see some drinking water bottle for rehydrate marked electrolyte, contain calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium bicarbonate .and other one sodium bicarbonate ,my question is :are sodium bicarbonate better than potassium bicarbonate and witch concentration is good for rehydrate ,sodium or potassium is prior for body ?thank you very much

Answer
Dear Sir/Madam,

Oral Rehydration solutions are given when there is loss of electrolyte leading to a dangerous fall in osmotic pressure in body cells. In addition, glucose or cooked starch formulation is also added as source of energy. Typical compositions recommended are shown in the table attached.
Different manufactures recommend some change in composition and to change flavor. That is not very critical. All formulations will contain almost the constituents. Any nutrient chemicals found in edible plant juice plus some additional electrolyte can be given. Ratio of potassium to sodium is important. Whether it is bicarbonate or chloride is not important. In short, both are good.
