Wayne, John - The Duke's horses name in True Grit

Expert: Mel Priddle - 5/28/2009

Question
I recently read an article stating the horses name in True Grit was Dollor or Dollar, not sure which.  However, I specifically remember when Lucky Ned Pepper was wounded toward the end of the movie and he took aim at Rooster but shot his horse.  Rooster was pinned under the horse and he said "damn you Bo (or Beau not sure how it's spelled) this is the first time you ever gave me reason to cuss you".  Can you confirm this?  Maybe the "new" horse he rides at the very end where he says, "come see a fat old man sometime" and jumps a 4 rail fence is named Dollar.

Answer
Hello Jeff,

"Beau" and "Dollor" both appeared in the film "True Grit". Beau can be seen jumping the fence with Wayne in the final scene.

Don't forget that the horses are just "actors" as far as the film is concerned. When Wayne says "Damn you Beau", that is the name of the horse within the film. His real name was Dollor.

Hope that's clear. Cheers.........Mel.
