Question QUESTION: i checked out this site and you seem to be the only sensible answers i have
seen, i am from the UK, i got married in St Lucia in February, a bit hasty, do i
have to do anything in the UK for my marriage to be recognized here in the UK ?
Plus if i want a divorce what do i have to do ? where do i apply ? and to whom in
which country ? St lucia or england ? Thanks
ANSWER: Hi Charlie:
Thank you for your kind words. Your marriage in St. Lucia would be legal as long as you abided by the laws for marriage there and in the UK. Did you get a marriage license in St. Lucia and file the proper paperwork in the UK?
According to UK divorce laws, a couple cannot seek a divorce in the first year of marriage. If you qualify, you can seek an annulment in the UK if any of the following apply to you:
If one of you was already married at the time of your marriage
If you didn't give your valid consent to the marriage
If your spouse was under 16 at the time of the wedding
If you weren't a fully male/female couple
If your spouse had a communicable form of a sexually transmitted disease when you got married
If your spouse was pregnant with someone else's child and you didn't know about it
If you didn't conform with the proper legal requirements - i.e. not filling in forms properly
It typically takes 6 to 8 months to be granted an annulment so it really is a question of what is less costly, both personally and financially, since they will both take about the same amount of time to obtain.
If you would like any advice in relation to annulments, please contact:

I am sorry that you find yourself in such a position, but hopefully you can sort it out with as little pain as possible.
I hope this helps. Should you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me again.

QUESTION: Wendy, credit is given where credit is due and thanks for all your help, i am
confused with regards to just one point and that is as you say "file the proper
paperwork in the UK". Before in the UK and after arriving back i have not filed any
paper work with any governing body ? should i have ? no one has said this is
something i should have done, can you advise or point me in the right direction to
gather this information
Answer Hi Charlie:
The filing of paperwork was a misunderstanding on my part. You only needed to file it if you were married in the UK which you were not. I apologize for not noticing that sooner.
I found another website you might want to visit. It is:
It is much less costly to utilize their services than to use a high solicitor so you may want to contact them when the time comes. Remember, you must remain married for at least one year before you can file. The above website gives a great deal helpful information so I would urge you to take a look at it as soon as possible.
I hope this helps. Should you have an further questions, please feel free to contact me again.
