Question Hi,
I have some questions I hope you can help me with..
I am from Sweden and me and my canadian fiance are getting married in Sweden this fall. What kind of papers does he need? (He is from Alberta)
We read somewhere that we might have to get married here in Canada first cause of his car insurance and other things.. How does that work? Can we just go to the city hall and sign papers and still get married in Sweden later?
Do you know what kind of papers I would need to get married in Canada?
Thank you for your time!
Answer Hi Hanna:
I am not aware of how not marrying in Canada would affect your finance's car insurance so my suggestion would be to speak to the company he has insurance through and find out.
As for marrying in Sweden, here is some information I found about Canadians getting married there.
Canadian citizens wishing to be married in Sweden are often required to present to local authorities a letter that the Canadian government has no objection to its citizens marrying in Sweden. The Consular Section of the Embassy would issue a "Statement in Lieu of Certificate of Non-Impediment" to a Canadian citizen upon request. To obtain this letter, the Canadian citizen must provide a valid Canadian passport and details of the marriage. The fee for this service is CDN$ 50 (SEK280).
If you find he must marry in Canada for insurance purposes, then you could still marry in Sweden but it would be a vow renewal ceremony and the above would not apply. However, you should check with the Swedish Embassy in Canada to find out what, if anything, you need to do to get married in Canada.
I hope this helps. Should you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me again.
