Question
May daughter and future son-in-law are both US citizens but would like to have the religious ceremony in Mexico, but the "legal" official ceremony by a Justice of the Peace in the U.S.  Do you know if there is there any legal impediment for this?

Answer
You can have a religious Ceremony in Mexico. Spiritual weddings are ideal for couples who fulfill their legal marriage requirements at home, or those who just want to declare their love and commitment to each other without the legality of a marriage license. Foreigners can legally be married in Mexico. Couples must present the following documents and comply with all requirements. The civil ceremony is the only ceremony legally recognized in Mexico. A justice of the peace performs this ceremony.

If you want to be legally married in Mexico, it important you know this procedure will take some time out of your vacation. It is required that you be here at least five days prior to the wedding day. You will also need to begin the paperwork at least three months in advance.

For example you can go to Puerto Vallarta and have a spiritual wedding which allows you the freedom to choose the type of marriage ceremony you'll have, the vows you will be saying, and where you want the wedding to take place. They will work with a non-denominational and bilingual minister.

This does not affect the legal ceremony you wish to have here in the states.

I will provide a link to better help you with the logistics on the spiritual ceremony
