Weddings - seating at wedding

Expert: Stan Wiest - 1/30/2008

Question
My husband's daughter is getting married. Her mother/husband and I get
along very well. Her step-mother, (married for 17 years to father and father
had custody- divorced 5 years ago. We have been married 4), and I do not
really know one another but she did create many problems at my husband's
son's wedding 2 years ago for me. I get along very well with daughter. What is
best way for seating at church? At husband's son's wedding she and 45 family
members refused to move after wedding planner asked them to and husband
and I wound up standing room only in back. She had brough many guests
uninvited. Bride's mother/husband and father/me are paying for all of
wedding.

Answer
Your husband will be escorting his daughter as part of the wedding party entrance. He should sit next to you right behind her bridesmaids. Her mother and husband and you should be seated before the wedding party ( if acceptable to the bride and all of you- you four could sit in the same pew). I would have a corsage for the stepmother and the church pew behind you and your husband reserved for her. I would have her wait in the church vestibule and have one of the groomsmen present her with her flowers and escort her to "her"  pew with her close party, escort. As she was parent for 17 years it is a nice way to acknowledge those years and may avoid any confrontation.
Please speak to the bride first as to her wishes- but you and your husband should have the seating directly behind the bridesmaids.
The rows for the bridal party members should be roped off with a ribbon or floral cord as also the rows for parents, grandparents (grooms side also). These rows are then very distinctly marked as reserved.
If this doesn't seem workable- you could sit to the left of the bridesmaids. Arrangements for enough seating needs to be firmly in place before the day and the groomsmen should be prepared for such arrangements. The rehearsal is the best time to make sure they are aware of special problems.
    I hope this helps you
