Question I am buying a new tuxedo for my daughters' wedding. It is an elegant 12:00 pm garden ceremony, followed by a tea and reception until 6:00, at the same location. my dilemma. My daughters love the classic black single button tux with a white tie / vest combo. I say improper dress. they say, I'm nuts, that it does'nt matter for a middle class wedding. HELP. Thank you kindly.
Answer In the end, it is the bride's call. If she wants all of her male attendants in smoking jackets and ascots for a 8 am wedding, that would be her call to make. =)
Traditional etiquette, however, is a bit more reserved when it comes to afternoon and lunchtime receptions. In addition, outside ceremonies and receptions are generally more casual than indoor ceremonies. Depending on where you live, a May wedding in a tuxedo could cause heat stroke. I know some of the more southern states in the US can have brutal heat indexes starting in mid-April. Your daughter may not know how incredibly hot you can get in a black tux with midday sun beating down on you. However, I suggest you let her know about it. The last thing she wants is her wedding party sweltering and miserable in the heat.
For outdoor receptions, traditional etiquette goes for a more casual approach- button down shirts sans jackets and dress pants for the dressiest of outdoor ceremonies. Men traditionally only wore jackets for indoor ceremonies unless it was a wedding taking place in the fall or winter.
