Expert: Reverend John Fliris - 2/13/2008

Question
Hello, we are a couple living in Italy, i'm italian and my girlfriend is american. we would like to move to the us, get married and stay. We are wondering if we could just move and get married right away after getting there. What documens would we need? Would i be able to stay and get a visa right after marriage? Would it be different in different states? How long would lit take for documents nedded?
We thank you in advance for your suggestions,
Ivan Zanovello

Answer
Dear Ivan: Sorry it took so long to respond... I have been away for a few days.....I do believe that as long as your fiancee is an American citizen you can. The laws governing visa's and citizenship are all Federal government based so the same laws would apply for all the states. As far as for getting the Marriage license it is done rather quickly, with enough proper identification usually the same day, although some states require a short waiting period after getting the license. The embassy would be a great place to look if you would have other questions about citizenship and the types of Visa's that there are. Hoped this helped.... Reverend John
