Weddings/Formal Feb Wedding-What 2 wear?

Question
Hi-my husband and I are invited to my former bosses' daughters wedding. Wedding is at 6pm followed by Adult dinner and dancing at a fancy reception hall. Never attending a formal wedding, not sure what to wear. I was thinking about a pair of cream pants with a black lacy sleeveless top, with either a cream sweater or lacy shawl. I have many cocktail-type dresses I could wear, but I wore these to work and many of the guests will be x-fellow workers. Help! I'm lost. Believe it or not, I do not have a "cute black dress". Would the cream outfit work or should I get a "cute black dress"??
I don't believe a pantssuit would be formal enough for a formal evening event. I think cocktail dresses may also be a little too casual. A "little black dress" would definitely be too casual- that's more for a nice dinner than for a formal, evening wedding. =) You may need to purchase a dress for the event. You would need a formal dress or dressy semi-formal dress.
