Subject: exercise routine
Question Hi Karen,
I have been recently going to the gym lately. I have been going atleast 3
times a week for over an hour, with atleast 20 minutes on the treadmill
running about a mile and a half and the rest of my time on the weightlifting
machines or the program guide that the physical trainer provided especially
for me at the gym. I am confused about what to work on while I'm at the
gym. My boyfriend goes to the gym and in the military so I see him for some
exercise advice, but i don't know if I should take it because he's at a different
level and a man with a different body structure. He tells me to go the gym
every day working out two muscle groups at a time such as biceps and chest
one day and the next day triceps and back. I've been doing that but I don't
feel a work out or see results. Should I go to the gym everyday working out
two muscle groups or can I go to the gym at least three times a day working
out my whole body? I guess my question is what exercise routine should I
do? I want to be able to see the results. And when weight lifting, I want to be
able to achieve a lean slender look, so I'm always afraid to lift more weight
when the weight that I have been lifting isn't that tough anymore. Is it OK to
lift more weight than before and still be able to achieve a lean look and not a
bulky one? Also I've never ran before but now that I'm doing it my knees are
started to hurt. When i'm sitting idle there will be sharp pains in my knees,
what do I do for that? I'm only 21 years old, I don't understand why i have so
much pain in my knees already. Well I've asked a lot of questions. Thank you
for your time.

Answer Nastasia,
Boy! First of all, don't work out 3x a day. I would need to see what you are doing exactly. What exercies, which machines etc and how many sets and how many reps and what kind of weight. You may not be working hard enough. So, let's look at that first.
Also, don't be afraid of being bulky. In the first place if you are a woman who has a huge propensity to build muscle it will always shrink when you stop working muscle so hard. Most of the time those really beefy women have lifted hard and long to get like that.
That said, I think you need to lift more to get the look you want. Send me the info about your workouts and I can comment further.
Thanks, Karen
