Expert: Jerry Goodwin Date: 7/12/2008 Subject: walk or run
Question Jerry
Two or three times a week I jog on my treadmill for 45 minuteswhen I get home from work to help my weight loss goals.
Today was a nice day and I decided to forget the bus and walk home from work- took an hour,I felt like I had burned off some flab but my feet were sore.
Question: Is it better to walk or run for weight loss?
My cardio is OK and my general fitness,I just need to lose the belly.
Should I walk on my treadmill every day, especially in inclement weather,or stick to the two or three times a week runs?
When I was a poor student before I got a car I walked everywhere-and was skinny.
Thanks!
Answer Hi Sue,
Which will you do consistently? You may want to walk back and forth to work, or even bicycle if work has a place to store one. Then on days when you simply can't walk or ride your bike you can still use the treadmill. My wife and I purchased a treadclimber instead of a treadmill, and it does far better as far as fat burning than running on a treadmill, so my experience would say that walking on an uneven surface such as up and down hills etc like you probably are doing would be far better than running on a treadmill
The two exercises that I have found the best for me are cycling and bouncing on a trampoline, but we are all different. I love swimming also, but don't get to do that consistently, The Trampoline in the back yard and the Grandkids get me going at least once or twice a week and I cycle daily as I am training for the Golden Olympics here in Georgia.
You can also burn much more fat by adding some weight training to your routine. Building a small amount of additional muscle will burn a great deal of fat. There are many multijoint exercises you can do to burn fat which take almost no equipment and can be done in you house, apartment or the local park.

www.bmgfitness.com/abs great article by a female trainer Georgette Pann this is a must read for anyone especially females that want to tighten the tummy.

and if you are looking for a good all around program with everything you need then I have had great luck using this plan of Jon Benson's http://www.simplyeatdiet.com/?hop=trainerjer
He offers free newsletter, sign up for it even if you don't buy the program, lots of good info there.
When you were a poor student you probably not only walked everywhere but also ate quite a bit less fatty foods, maybe without even realizing it. You probably couldn't afford the higher priced, higher fat stuff that comes with being more successful.
