Weightlifting & Exercise - Increasing exercise time

Expert: Jerry Goodwin - 1/23/2009

Question
I have been weight lifting for about a year, using the new rules of lifting for
women book, and would like to get rid of the fat covering my improved
muscles (I want to lose about 20 lbs.) I am going through menopause,
watching my diet, and have been doing 40 minutes weight lifting +15
minutes cardio intervals 3 times a week.  I want to increase my total strength
+ aerobic time to 3 1/2 hours per week.  What is the best use of my
workout time? Note: I do yoga regularly so I don't need any flexibility
exercises in the 3 1/2 hours. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Jane,

First I would take a good look at your diet and nutrition plan. That is where you can do the most about removing the fat from over the muscle. I know you are eating healthy, but keep track for a few weeks, write down EVERYTHING and then determine if your diet is really as healthy as it could be.

As far as increasing the time you are working out, there is no perfect answer. Personally I would increase the resistance training or you could simply add one more day of what you already do. Just make sure to give the body plenty of time to rest also. If you are now working out 3 days a week try doing 4 just do them every other day. That way you give the body time to recuperate between bouts of intense exercise.

Here is a video by a female trainer that is specific for women and building great abs.

Hope this helps,

Have a great day
