Expert: Jerry Goodwin - 10/26/2009
Question MYTH or FACT:
Exercising just your legs (walking, jogging, using ankle weights) will not affect the fat you lose in your legs.
Answer Hi Kayla,
I am not sure that you can exercise just your legs, most people even walking tend to swing their arms and things of that nature which would be something, besides that you would still be exercising your core muscles like your abs etc.
Walking, running and such do in fact help somewhat with fat loss in the legs if that is the area where your body stores fat. Many people especially women tend to store a good deal of heir fat in their hips and upper legs, and for these people any exercise that burns calories will help with removing fat from that area.
So in my opinion it is definitely a Myth, any exercise that burns calories, which is any exercise no matter what body part is moving will help burn fat in your most active fat storage zones, for some that is the upper legs and thighs. For many it is the abdominal area. Burning calories is the main thing. A calorie deficit will normally cause a loss of fat and it will be from wherever the body takes it. This depends usually on where most of the fat is stored, if that happens to be the legs then that is where the body will take the stored fat from.
Hope this helps,
Have a great day
Jerry
