Weightlifting & Exercise - exercise

Expert: David Dickeson, A.S. - 10/20/2009

Question
sir, i am a 51 year old man and had disc prolapse L-5/6 about 15 years ago . at present i have no physical disability and am living a normal healthy life.
which  exercise should i avoid or do to keep myself more fit ?

Answer
Hello Amit

The back is 80% muscle, 20% bones. When you have bone damage, you depend MORE on your muscles to do the work your bones cannot do. The best way to make your muscles more stronger is to join a gym with emphasis on machines that control movement so you can exercise with precision and especially important - control. You do not want to be rocking about while trying to control a weight bar or dumbbells!

You will get your best results by exercising once weekly. Start out with aerobics to warm up your muscles, then do the machines. End with aerobics. Keep track of you lifting weight totals. SLOWLY increase the weight so your body will adapt accordingly.

Thanks for the question. I hope you have many years free of pain or problems.
