Weightlifting & Exercise - Calf Bumps when Running

Expert: Jerry Goodwin - 11/17/2009

Question
Born with clubbed feet, running never has come easy to me.  26 years old now and have been challenging my body at the gym for about a year in addition to mountain bike riding.  I started my attempts at long distance running for the purpose of a triathlon type event in October 2010.  I can run about 1 mile until I start having sever pain in my right calf.  I have two bumps that raise up on the outside of my leg about half way between my knee and ankle.  This pain is not something I can just "run through".  I have tried and it gets so bad that I can not walk without it literally feeling like someone is cutting my leg off at that spot.  Usually after and hour from the conclusion of my short run, the swelling of the bumps reduces and disappears completely. The next day I feel 100% fine.  These bumps are soft, with some resistance and texture if I push on them. Squishy is my wording, about the size of a nickel in diameter and raise a good 1/4".  Any thoughts?

Answer
Hi Jason,

First let me ask you a question, do you live in the US? If so, have you ever been out of the US, for a trip or vacation, or a stint with the military?

I am not a physician and this sounds like something that a physician should look at and see if there is something medical there.

If I were a physician I would probably request a Doppler study of the legs first, and if that turns up negative then I would start looking at other things. The second thing I would look for is a parasite. While these formerly were mainly seen in 3rd world countries, they are being seen more and more often in the US as more and more the cultures of many ethnic groups are melted together.

There also could be a lactic acid build up that is causing a temporary "growth" on or close to a nerve, which would be similar to a neuroma.

Unfortunately I can't really give you an idea of which is more likely and I am sure there are other possibilities. Personally I would check with a physician, preferably one that specializes in sports medicine.

There is also the possibility that your club feet have something to do with the problem. Only a physician that specializes in sports medicine would really have the right knowledge and tools to find the cause.

Have a great day

Hope this helps

Jerry
