Weightlifting & Exercise - overall exercise routine

Expert: Karen Sullivan - 11/7/2009

Question
Hi Karen,

I am a 42 yr old woman.  I am 5'5 and weigh approximately 150 lb.  I strength train 4 days/wk during my lunch break.  This translates to about 30 minutes of weight training each day. I do chest and triceps on one day, back and bi-ceps on another, legs on another, and shoulders on another.  Also, each day after work, I try to get to the gym for 1/2 hour cardio on an elliptical.

My question is: is this a good routine?  I think I need to point out that when I weight train, I like to lift heavier weights for fewer reps as opposed to light weights for many reps.

My goal is overall fitness.  But, I would also like to lose a couple of inches and fit comfortably back into my size 6 jeans.

I had this same routine about 8 months ago, but I 'took a break' and put on a few lbs.

Answer
April,
It is a good routine if you like going to the gym every day.  But I see there are time constraints with your schedule.  It seems that it worked for you before so I imagine it will help now.  The key is in the food you are eating.  Is your diet the same????After you have worked out for a while and if you find you haven't lost then I would tighten up on your food.  Stay very lean and fresh.
Let me know if you want to talk about food.
Karen
