Question Hi Jerry. I was wondering if you could answer a question regarding the difference between having a heart rate in the cardio range vs. the fat burn range.
I'm 24, and trying to get more "cut." If I set a treadmill to a 7.0 incline, and a speed of about 3.0, my heart rate is at about 125. I do this for 45 mins to 60 mins. I have been told that doing that will allow me to lose more weight because it's in this fat burning heart rate range. Previously I was running at a 6.0 speed, 0 incline, for 25 mins, and my heart rate would be about 170. Which do you think would speed up my metabolism most?
Thanks, hope that's not confusing.
Answer Hi Chris,
They will only really speed up your metabolism for very short periods after the actual exercise bouts. The amount of difference between the 25 minutes at 170 and the 60 minutes at 125 is really insignificant since it takes 3500 calories to burn 1 pound of fat.
Personally I think cardio or aerobics for "fat burning" is way over rated. Resistance training will build muscle which will later need calories to maintain it and therefore burn more fat. The new muscle as well as old muscle will need energy in the form of calories even when you are at complete rest, so in the long run will end up burning far more actual calories.
A good nutrition plan is far more beneficial in removing that last layer of fat than cardio or resistance training and without a good nutrition plan neither cardio or resistance can be as effective.
