Weightlifting & Exercise - pectoral pain

Expert: Jerry Goodwin - 2/5/2009

Question
I have had severe pain in my left pec. At first doctors thought it was my heart. Went to heart doctor & he run all the heart procedures. ALL clear. Said I had inflammation in the area around muscle. Have not lifted for 4wks. Could it be a strain or tear? Still have severe pain.

Answer
Hi Jeff,

It could be a tear, you really would need to see a physician, preferably one that specializes in sports medicine. If it is a pec tear, you will need to stop lifting for a while, depending on your healing abilities 6 to 8 weeks even as long as 12 weeks for some, then you would have to go back to lifting small weights before doing any heavy stuff.

You need to get with a physician that specializes in sports medicine, they will probably do an MRI of the area.

Wish I could give you better news, but it does sound like a pec tear, which is really not that uncommon amongst lifters. Here is a post that may be of help

Here is another http://www.pectear.com/

Hope this helps

Have a great day and get well soon
