Question Hi my partner has just turned 60 and needs to lose weight and get fit.I have recently started weight lifting classes and want to know if he would be able to do any weight training without doing any more damage. At present he has no strengh in his grip as both hands have been operated on.Can you recommend anything? he wont go to gym(shy)
thanks
Answer Hi Margaret,
Weight lifting can indeed be done, but it will be a slow process, and should be done with very light weights. In fact I would probably start with resistance bands and would use the lightest resistance. The idea is to strengthen the area, not damage it more.
As far as weight loss, nutrition is far more important than exercise, though exercise will help considerably. Just walking will help. He should take it slow. If possible I would ask the physician to recommend a good Physical Therapist to help with strengthening the wrists.
As far as working out, he should be able to do most any exercise anyone else can do, he just needs to start slow and work his way up. As far as being shy, he can easily set up a home gym for very little money. I have picked up some great equipment at yard sales, auctions etc for almost nothing. I am talking about machines, free weights and other items that would cost hundreds of dollars in the stores for as little as 2.00. He can set up an entire home gym for less than 100.00 with an exercise ball, resistance bands, and some space. I have used that setup for a long time to train people in their own homes.
If he wants to really get his weight dropped quickly, I have heard some great things about acai berry for weight loss as far as a good supplement, most of the people that I know taking it also do a colon cleanse product and the combination seems to be working quite well, I haven't tried it myself, but have been thinking about getting my wife on it, because she had surgery a couple years back and has found it real hard to stay in shape after that. You can do a search for the acai berry products, they are all over. If you decide to use them let me know and I will see which products the people here that are getting good results are taking. just email me jerry@bmgfitness.com with subject "allexperts question" or something similar. I get several hundred emails a day, so if the subject doesn't grab my attention I will probably delete it without realizing it is important.
