Question What signs are there that I am losing weight? Last week I went to the gym 4 times for a good 90 minutes each time and I'm not sure if I lost any weight other than 2lbs, which is more or less a daily fluxuation. I am 5' 11" and 213lbs. I want to lose a good 20lbs or so to get rid of the fat over my ab muscles. What should I do? What exactly are calories by the way? I've always been fuzzy on that, but try to burn 300 of them each workout at least.
Answer Hi James,
Going to the gym will not likely cause you to lose weight on the scales, it may actually cause you to add weight. The reason for this is that new muscle being built by the exercise may indeed weigh more than the the fat you are losing. It takes 3500 Calories to burn 1 lb of fat. If you are not also changing your nutrition plan and only using the scale as an indicator you are not going to see the results you want.
I am not saying that muscle weighs more than fat, a pound of muscle weighs exactly the same as a pound of fat. However muscle takes up much less space and it dynamic where fat takes up much more space and is static. Dynamic means muscle will continue to burn calories to sustain itself, fat does not need to sustain itself, it is stored energy.
You could check your waist measurement, one professional told she has her clients jump up and down naked in front of a mirror, tissue that jiggles is fat and that is what you want to lose.
So improve your diet and exercise, you may try some supplements like hydroxycut, Xenadrine or Relacore, I have clients that have used each of these and some swear they help. I used some stuff from EAS back in the 90's during a BFL contest, it worked OK. THe supplements are up to you.
Ok so what is a calorie?
A Calorie is simply a unit of measure of energy, Food contains Calories Protein and Carbohydrates contain 4 Calories per gram, fat contains 9 calories per gram. 1 lb of fat is equal to about 3500 Calories, that is how many calories you need to burn or use to remove 1 lb of fat from your body.
