Question Two years ago (now I'm 29 years old) I suffered several injuries during my powerlifting training routine (C5 herniated disk, chondromalacia patellae, shoulder and elbow tendinnitis). I've received treatment therapies, and now I was told to return to my training with gradual increase of weights. Since I don't have any specialized instructor, I had to make my own routines, but I've noticed that some exercises produces some level of transient discomfort to my joints. I would like to know if you could give me some strengthening routines to be prepared prior to return to my powerlifting training. I know I won't be able to compete again, but at least I wish I would be able to do my workout pain-free. I appreciate your advises. Best regards.
Answer Hi Wilson,
I am very sorry that it has taken so long to answer your question. My son in law's brother was murdered Friday and we have been involved in the searches etc. The body was found Monday. Here is a link to the video from walb news
Anyway to answer your question, you may never be totally pain free, but you can definitely get stronger. If your physician can recommend a physical therapist that would be the way to go. Our physical therapist at the hospital where I work is also a personal trainer and I see that quite often.
Some pain will likely always be there. I damaged my knee in 1973, and had to have two surgeries. I still have pain there. Supplements like Glucosamine and Chondroitin as well as Fish oil a good multivitamin etc help but sometimes especially during cycling competitions or long rides I have to add a pain killer.
Here is what I would do. First follow the doctors advice, take it very slow, start with low weights and increase gradually. pick exercises that strengthen the muscle around the area that has been injured as well as 1 exercise that targets the exact area that has been injured. Be extra careful doing that exercise and use perfect form with very low weights, you need to be careful not to re-injure yourself. You should be very careful with all the exercises but especially extra careful with ones that target the exact area that was hurt.
You can get example of hundreds of exercises that you may want to include in your regimen by going to my website at www.bmgfitness.com scrolling down the left side to free exercise library and clicking there. You can then do a search for the bodypart, exercise etc.
I would guess that with the type of injuries you mention any power lifting competition will be out of the question for quite some time. At 29 though you still have time to recover and if you are able to find a good therapist that can help make sure you don't re-injure yourself then competition may be in the future.
Follow up with me in about a week and I will see if I can find some more medical information on your injuries and the therapies for them through the hospital database where I work. I may be able to give you more information that might help at that time.
