Weightlifting & Exercise - Forearm injury

Expert: Jerry Goodwin - 4/22/2009

Question
Hi,

I am 19 years old been working out lifting weights for about six months now. About eight weeks ago i strained my forearm on my left side and so i stopped for six weeks until i felt that my arm was better. Last week i was doing my bicep curls fine no strain, this week used lower weights and my forearm once again had this twinge feeling as if it has come back.

Is this going to happen to me whenever i train my biceps now?

It does not affect me when doing any of my other work outs only when i curl with palms up.

Answer
Hi Liam,

Injuries are different on each individual, so while there are general presumptions regarding injuries and healing there is no pat answer. The pain may come back over and over again, or may go away completely after a couple more sessions.

If the injury does not affect any other exercise you may try doing barbell curls instead of dumbbell curls as the difference in the position of the muscle may be enough to make the difference in whether you exercise pain free or not. Or you may want to try a machine if you have one available. Preacher Curls are also great since you get the extra support. Go to www.bmgfitness.com and scroll down to the free exercise library icon, click there and see a bunch of exercises for the biceps.

You may also try laying off biceps curls for a couple more weeks and doing them may be once every 2 or 3 weeks or even once a month then bring them back into your workout slowly, instead of bringing them back right away.

In general at 19, you should heal up pretty well and assuming that there is no permanent damage you should be able to exercise pain free within a few months, just make sure to use excellent form on all exercises and do not try to put too much weight in an exercise to quickly. Young men often try to lift way more than they should and cause injury.

Hope this helps,

Have a great day

Jerry
