Question a few weeks ago I tore my ACL, meniscus, and just really messed up my knee
pretty bad going over a hurdle at track practice. I am not scheduled for surgery yet, but will in the next few weeks. I understand that it can be about
6 months before one begins to return to jogging. What I am wondering is
how long it could be before I can start lifting weighs lower body again. I am a
powerlifter wanting to be back to full strength in time for winter, about 8
from now. I can do rehab exercises every day, and am willing to do anything
to be back to full strength as soon as possible, so i can have time to train
before the season starts, so i don't just come back, but come back stronger.
Thank you, ~ellie
Answer Hi Ellie,
The amount of time to heal an injury like this different with each individual. Follow exactly whatever the surgeon tells you, get physical therapy and do NOT try to overdo or go too fast. I had a similar injury while serving in the Navy at GTMO back in the early 70's and was it was very close to 6 months before I was back to doing much and 18 Months before I was released with a clean bill of health from NRMC Newport.
I did mine playing softball, so I know how these things can come at really odd times and in very unique situations.
The Navy though wants you back at 100% so when I left Nepwort I was playing on the Hospital Softball team and the flag football team.
Of course they didn't have arthroscopic surgery then and they do now, so recovery time is usually much quicker.
The main thing with this injury or any other is to take it slow, listen to your body, do not overdo, but do push slightly. Follow the rules set down by the caregiver and if possible get a local trainer or coach to work with you one on one. A good trainer can help immensely by making sure you are not overdoing it, but also not taking it to slow. The last thing you want to do is re-injure yourself or cause permanent damage.
