Weightlifting & Exercise - Back muscles...

Expert: Jerry Goodwin - 5/22/2009

Question
Hello and thanks for the service. I have recently ben performing core and abdominal exercises. I do vertical leg crunches, as well as full body crunches. I notice that when I do these, I feel the lower back muscles sort of strain, it's not a pain, it feels as though the muscles are being worked, if that's even possible. Do the back muscles get worked out, or is doing these exercises causing damage? Thank you.

Answer
Hi Drew,

Yes the back muscles are worked, there is no way to completely isolate any muscle group, when you do an exercise it virtually always causes muscle that you are not "targeting" to work also, depending on your form the exercise and other variables depend on how much. In fact Straight leg setups are an exercise that was often used to exercise the abs, but as we learned more about the body exercise physiologists found that this exercise caused a great deal of hip flexor involvement, in fact much more than desirable and so the crunch was born to better isolate the abs.

To find out more about ab workouts and such take a look at www.bmgfitness.ocm/abs and for a complete workout look at www.bmgfitness.com/workout also if you want a great ab program and a ton of information you should check out Mike Geary's program at http://tinyurl.com/ofeyt5

Mike 's is a paid program, but he offers a lot of free stuff there also, and the ab program is definitely a bargain.

Hope this helps

Have a great day

Jerry
