Weightlifting & Exercise - Elbow /numbness is the hands and forearms

Expert: David Dickeson, A.S. - 6/21/2009

Question
I have been working out on and off for over 20 years ( I am 45 years old) lately I have redoubled my efforts and find after a particularly grueling split day routine when I try going to sleep that night my forearms ands hands get numb And it makes sleep choppy and sporadic as I am constantly being roused by pins and needles in my forearms and hands. Is there anything you can suggest to alleviate this problem. PS I take a 2000 mg of glucosamine / 1200 mg chondroitin /500 mg MsM daily

Answer
Hello Emilio

Sounds like you are having nerve damage problems. You can get that when you exercise too much. Not in terms of years (20 is very impressive), but how often you exercise every week. As we get older, we need more and more days of rest between lifting. At least three days of rest I would recommend for you. You can still lift daily, but do something light and save heavy for the fourth day. It would be a good idea to also see your doctor as he can give you a prescription for the pins-and-needles feelings. A nerve relaxer. Over-the-counter relaxers are all for muscles, so none of them will help.

Thanks for the question. Hope this helps.
