Weightlifting & Exercise - Staying motivated

Expert: David Dickeson, A.S. - 7/3/2009

Question
Hello David,

Recently,I signed up at the local gym and I love it. I had an amazing session with a trainer and I would like to continue, but not sure if I can afford it.

Lately,I've been skipping gym or going only once a week and that's not the way to go,I would like to see results and go on the regular basis(like 3 to 4 days a week)my problem is,I can't seem to stay motivated,I tend to feel sorry for myself telling myself that I'm tired and by the time I'm done it will be too late and I waisted my night basically.

My question to you is,what would be THE BEST way to stay motivated. I really like exercising an seeing results.

Thank You!

Answer
Hello Daira

The amazing fact about our bodies is that ANY exercise, even 1 minute a day, makes us healthier and happier. We crave exercise, but many times we are just TOO BUSY to do anything! I am well aware of being "too tired" I get up at 4 am and do not get to bed many times until 9-10 PM.

To 'get around' my exhaustion, I exercise for a few minutes when I wake up, again during my first break at work, again during my lunch break, again during my 2nd (afternoon) break, and finally just before I go to bed. It all adds up. Once a week, once a day, short time available, long time available. It is all good. So you do not have to feel sorry for yourself. And yes, I miss some days because I just don't feel like exercising! There is always another day...

If you are on a budget, as most of us are, and can afford only once a week in the gym - GREAT! Your body will welcome the once-weekly session.

If you find the amount of TIME grueling at the gym every week, tell your trainer you can give only a specific amount of time each week.

And a plus; when weightlifting, the more rest you give between lifting, the better your lifting goals will be. The body builds muscular tightness and strength when it is resting, not during the lifting.

Bottom line; weeks and months go by, your body get's healthier and healthier. Time is not a major factor. Just DO it!!

Thanks for the question. Hope it helps.
