Weightlifting & Exercise - Not losing weight

Expert: Charles Staley - 8/21/2009

Question
QUESTION: Hello,
Please offer me some advice!  I have been dieting and exercising for months now.  The most weight I lost was 2 lbs. and gained it back!  I am 5'4 and weight 133 lbs.  I exercise using the Gazelle and a stationery bike for 30-45 mins. 5 days a week.  I have been eating a South Beach High Protein bar for breakfast everyday and measuring fruits and veggies, almonds, yogurt, eating every two hours.  I do not eat a lot of meats for protein because the scale just goes up if I do.  I am not losing any weight, please tell me what should I do differently!

ANSWER: Hi Laurie, thanks for your question. My expertise is in helping people lose fat, not weight. So I'm afraid I might not be the best person to help you!

Sorry!

QUESTION: okay then, what's the difference between losing fat and losing weight?  I don't understand!  Excess weight is excess fat in my book.

Answer
Ahhh! Now we're getting somewhere Laurie!

The two "substances" on your body that can be modified vie nutrition and/or exercise are:

1) Muscle, and

2) Fat

Most of us (you included) want more of #1 and less of #2. Because that's what makes you lean, tight, toned, sculpted, svelte, whatever word you wanna use. You'll look and feel better, and you'll be healthier and more functional is you're mostly muscle, with minimal fat. In fact, if you ask the average 40-50-60 year old when they looked their best, they'll usually say "when I was 18" or "when I was 20" because that's when they had the most muscle— as they got older, their habits because more sedentary and they lost muscle.

This sets up a problem for some people though, because muscle weighs more than fat. Which means that usually, to look better, you'll end up being heavier, not lighter. In fact, a sure sign of a lean person is that she'll weigh more than what it looks like she weighs. "Fat" people weigh less than what it looks like.

Still with me?
