Hi Joe
I am 55. After giving up gluten, my big belly is starting to go down. It was never fat, just distended. In fact I have visible abs, and it is quite muscular, so no need to build those muscles up. Do you know anything that might target the underling muscles? Thanks!

Answer
If you are referring to the "transverse" abdominals, they are worked primarily by isometric work such as planks, burpees, weighted pushups and stability ball rolls. If you have "muscular" abdominals, part of your distension could be from the muscle itself. Most people don't realize how easy it is to get the rectus group to grow. When they grow, they grow outward.  The isometric exercises I listed above should help them "suck in" so to speak.

They are only a secondary or tertiary mover for spinal flexion motions like crunches and are worked to a slight degree by leg lifts although the primary mover on that exercise is hip flexors.
