Weightlifting & Exercise - Building muscle

Question
Thanks for your reply. Can you go into more detail. How would I benefit from a weight lifting program at this point. I have always been involved in and still am involved in contact sports such as boxing and mixed martial arts. How do genetics effect muscle growth at a young age vs now that I am older? I am really interested in this. Would I achieve any muscle growth at this point? What would you recommend? Thank you for your reply.

-----Question-----
Can everyone build muscle size with weightlifting. The reason I ask is I lifted weights often when I was in my 20s. I am now in my mid 40s. Back then I tried to learn everything I could from different magazines trying different routines. My strength continued to increase but the size of the muscle did not. ( with exception of the lats) My arms never seemed to get bigger, especially the forearms. Is it my body type or was I not training correctly. I have a slender build at 165lbs. I want to start lifting again but what can I expect this time around. Thanks for any help you can give.
-----Answer-----
Everyone can build some muscle. How much you can gain depends on a number of factors, including genetics. Age is a big component too. At this point in your life, it will be difficult to add much mass, though being thinner like you are is an advantage. (A lot of guys our age have weight to lose, which makes it very difficult to even talk about gaining weight).

Answer
Genetics effect your ability to gain muscle (not age specific). Different people have different aptitude, if you will, for gaining muscle. It's easier for some that others, and all people have a maximum that they can achieve through natural means.

No one can tell you what your capacity is, or how much muscle you might be able to gain. No matter what, you will get stronger and build some amount of muscle...it might be a lot, or it might be a little.
