Weightlifting & Exercise - Quick question

Expert: Brian - 7/14/2006

Question
Hello,
I have a quick question. Due to some training, I will have to lift a certain weight on a flat bench press machine. (universal type) At my gym, the closest machine we have to a vertical bench press machine. Could you tell me how the weight compares? In other words, I have built my level up on the vertical to surpass the weight I need to lift on the flat, but it the weight more or less the same. Flat vs. vertical bench press machines? The staff at my gym didn't seem to understand my question. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Answer
Felix - It's impossible to say. Different machines work differently, and there is no easy way to compare one to the other. Factors that would make one machine easier or harder than another include the pulley system, the incline or decline (if any), the positioning of the handles.

You might even find that the weight you lift on different vertical machines (different brands or models) will vary because of the above.
