Weightlifting & Exercise - What are some good exercises to bulk up the chest?

Expert: David Dickeson, A.S. - 12/29/2005

Question
I appreciate the advice you gave me yesterday.
I've been trying to get a bigger chest that puffs out even when you got a shirt on, the type girls like.Thats why I got a bench press, but you say dumbell exercises are better for the chest. Whats a good workout plan for the chest (What exercises should I do & how many sets & reps should I do.)

Appreciate it.

Answer
Hello again Jared

Girls, and women, also like the big, broad shoulders. Even if you do not have a flat or washboard stomach. Human females immediately notice the above-the-botom-of-the-ribs area, front and back.

Do shoulder shruggs with dumbbells. Go light, lift slowly. Lift 20 times. Do every other day.

Here is a dumbbell tip that really works; lie on the floor. Arms spread out to the sides. Bring your dumbbells up slowly where they touch, directly above you. Go down slowly. Do light to start out, really pulls the muscles in the chest. Do 20.

Do also every other day. If you have a lot of pain afterwards, give yourself 1-2 more days rest for full recovery.

Reason for the floor; benches are narrow, your have to concentrate on keeping your balance. With floor dumbbells you do not have to worry about balance, you can concentrate 100% on the lift.

Also do dumbbells where you have them straight up, lower them above your head, keeping the arms again straight the entire time. Raise them up, and down to the floor, your arms straight up, as if you were standing up, arms straight up in the air.

Standing up, bent over, bring your dumbbells in to your center, touching each other, bring them out, elbows bent. Keep going in and out. As before, 20 times is all you need. Really fatiques the muscles at 20. Take a rest every other day to allow the muscles to grow stronger.

Another exercise I like to do with dumbbells is to stand up, bend over a bit, and twist your lower torso back and forth with your arms, shoulders, dumbbells in your hand. Count to 20. Works the shoulders, back, chest, and especially your lower back and ab muscles.

When you get the big chest look, don't go fashion crazy. Girls and women do not feel comfortable around a guy with sleeveless shirts. Trust me, they don't. Worse is those gym sleeveless shirts with the big arm holes on the sides. They DO like the guys with the dark-color tight t-shirt look. I get mine from Spreadshirt where I have words printed on the back.

I have:

IT'S NOT THE VEHICLE YOU DRIVE, IT'S THE SIZE OF THE ARM HANGING OUT THE CAR WINDOW

ASK ME WHY I TALK LIKE AH-NOLD (when they ask why, I flash the 19 inch biceps), sweet....

GRANDE Y FUERTE (for the spanish ladies; means big and strong)

HEAVY METAL FAN (has image also of a barbell)

I SHOULDER PRESSED 400 POUNDS FOR 60 SECONDS THIS MORNING
WHAT DID YOU DO THIS MORNING?

REAL MAN
NO PROBLEMS, NO ISSUES
YOU CAN DEPEND UPON ME

NEVER GIVE UP
NEVER SURRENDER

and my favorite;

WHAT IS BEST IN LIFE?
1. LIVE LONG
2. OUTLAST YOUR ENEMIES
3. DIE STRONG

what else could we ask for?

Thanks for the question. If you have any more, ask!

Good lifting
