Weightlifting & Exercise - rapid weight loss for a tournament

Expert: Jerry Goodwin - 12/29/2006

Question
hey, im on my high school wrestling team and i have a tournament on monday.  Im 185 pounds, and if i lose 5 pounds i can drop a weight class which would benefit me greatly. ive heard that rapid weight loss is unhealthy, but im still wondering if there is any way to drop the weight before monday, (i.e. running, etc) and if there is could you suggest the best way p.s. ive also heard that a whole lot of running could do the trick, that would be the way id prefer to lose it since im somewhat of a good runner,is it possible to lose it that way, if not then could you suggest something

Answer
Hi Rashaad,

There is no healthy way to lose 5 lbs in two days. It can and has been done. The combination of running with very little food intake and plenty of water, no juice, no sports drinks may make it.

I used to wrestle some in high school too so I know the drill. We used to use caffeine tablets because they were diuretics and would help eliminate water weight, so we believed. I don't remember ever dropping enough weight to go down a class in two weeks any lone two days. I stayed between 190-200 all through my senior year.

You may want to try to drop the weight over a longer period and improve your wrestling skills. Even the little guys that don't look like much can get pretty tough when their on the mat.

Hope this helps,

Have a great day,

Jerry Goodwin
