Weightlifting & Exercise - speed

Expert: Brian - 7/15/2006

Question
How can I gain speed ....can I do it by lower body lifting? I heard that your hamstrings give you your speed if so what lifting techniques could I do to improve speed

Answer
You can gain strenght thru lifting. Strength is one of the components to speed, but not the only one. I wouldn't focus just on hamstrings, quads and calves and hip flexors are important too.

Leg press, squat, leg extension, leg curl and calf raises are exercises you could do.

But, also practice running. Practice short sprints. Running uphill is also touted as a way to improve speed.

Speed comes from stride length + stride frequency. Frequency can only be improved by practicing running.
