Weightlifting & Exercise - teen looking to build muscle mass

Expert: Brian - 8/28/2006

Question
Hey,
I am 17yr old male, 140 lbs, 5'9, and I have a build more on the thin side. I am very determined to gain weight and increase my muscle mass, to acheive a better looking body. I just recently started weight training, mostly with freeweights. Can you give me advice on how i should space out my workouts during the week, and any supplements i can take that can help enhance my workout? Is it true that effective muscle mass comes with short, intense workouts, followed by periods of resting? What workouts can I use to effectively work multiple muscle groups at once?

thanks for your time!

Answer
The best bet is to set up a weekly program where you work each muscle group on a separate day of the week. Like this:
Day 1 - Chest
Day 2 - Back
Day 3 - Legs
Day 4 - Shoulders
Day 5 - Triceps
Day 6 - Biceps
Day 7 - rest

Each day you should do 4 different exercises for the targeted muscle group...each exercies for 4 sets of 8 reps.
