Expert: Ernie Leimkuhler Date: 6/18/2008 Subject: oxy tank certification
Question I recently bought an old used oxygen tank for my oxy-acet torch. My local gas place wouldnt fill it as they aaid it was certified in 1982. They said it was junk. What are the rules on how old an oxy tank can be? Was mine junk? Don
Answer They are idiots.
If a tank is out of spec, they just send it back to the fill plant.
The plant performs a hydrotest on the tank.
If it passes, it gets restamped, and you get credited with a tank of that size.
Or you can request that specific tank back.
I don't know what their problem is, as this is standard procedure at every
welding supplier I have ever dealt with.
I think they were trying to pressure you into buying a new tank.
