About Jonathan Wright
Expertise I can answer questions about wild mammals, as well as other wild animals. I can also answer questions on extinct animals and zoos.
I do not have expertise in animal medicine and care and cannot give advice on veterinary problems. Please contact a wildlife veterinarian or a wildlife charity or organisation if you find an injured wild animal. Please do not take wild animals out of the wild. This can be illegal and also very cruel, especially if you do not know how to look after the animal.
I do not agree with fights between different animals. Please do not ask me questions about them.
Experience I have a zoology degree and have been interested in animals since I was two years old. I am a zoo volunteer at London Zoo. I have appeared on a BBC Radio Quiz, 'Wildbrain'.
Organizations World Wide Fund for Nature. Zoological Society of London. London Bat Group.
Publications Newsletters of London Zoo volunteers and the London Bat Group
Education/Credentials BSC degree in Zoology. 'A' levels in Zoology and Chemistry. 'O' Level in Biology.

Subject: Grey Squirrel
Question What can we feed a newborn squirrel?
Answer Dear Donnie
Thanks for your question. I also wish to thank the authors of the websites I used.
First of all, I'm disturbed that you have taken a newborn grey squirrel from the wild and do not know what to feed it. If you found the squirrel in its nest, you should have left it where it was. Are you sure that its mother isn't feeding it? As I state on my AllExperts page, "Please contact a wildlife veterinarian or a wildlife charity or organisation if you find an injured wild animal. Please do not take wild animals out of the wild. This can be illegal and also very cruel, especially if you do not know how to look after the animal." It is unlikely that you will be able to look after the squirrel properly (see http://www.squirrel-rehab.org/pleaseread.html) and, if the mother is looking for her baby, you may have been cruel, despite trying to be kind.
Please read the website http://www.squirrel-rehab.org/. It gives lots of advice, as well as details on how to contact help. It says that you shouldn't feed the baby squirrel anything, but you definitely mustn't give it cow's milk. You can put the squirrel in a small box with non-frayed toweling and place it on a heating pad and follow the instructions at http://www.squirrel-rehab.org/rehabinfo/stabilization.html. You must remove any parasites you find on the skin, but you will need to get a veterinarian to remove any parasites living beneath the skin.
Please contact a wildlife rehabilitator or charity as soon as possible so that the squirrel has some chance of surviving.
All the best
Jonathan
