About Jonathan Wright
Expertise
I can answer questions about wild mammals, as well as other wild animals. I can also answer questions on extinct animals and zoos. PLEASE DON'T SEND ME ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT PETS. IF YOU ARE REALLY WORRIED, YOU SHOULD CONTACT A VETERINARIAN. PLEASE DO NOT ASSUME THAT UNPAID PEOPLE ON ALLEXPERTS ARE AVAILABLE 24 HOURS A DAY AND WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH ADVICE THE MOMENT YOUR ANIMAL GETS ILL. Find out how to look after a pet before you get it. It is unfair to keep an animal in inappropriate conditions and give it the wrong food. If you can't keep an animal in good conditions, please don't bring it into your home. I'm not a vet and I don't have any expertise in animal medicine and care. I don't agree with people taking animals out of the wild and then expecting other people to give free advice on how to look after them. It is cruel to take animals away from their parents, who are able to look after the babies and may look for them, while putting their other babies at risk. You may need a licence to look after some animals. You may be breaking the law by keeping wild animals; please check with a local wildlife organisation. IF YOU FIND AN INJURED ANIMAL, PLEASE CONTACT A WILDLIFE VETERINARIAN OR CHARITY AND LET TRAINED STAFF LOOK AFTER THE ANIMAL. DO NOT TRY TO LOOK AFTER AN INJURED ANIMAL IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. Please do not remove eggs from nests. The mother birds will know the right temperature for the eggs and will not sit on them if the temperature is warm enough for them to develop naturally. It is illegal to remove eggs of some species and, unless you have an incubator or a broody hen, the egg may not develop. If you are allowed to touch the eggs, you can candle them (check details on websites) to see if the eggs are fertile. If the eggs are not fertile, they will not hatch. I do not agree with fights between different animals. Please do not ask me questions about them.

Question
what kind of wild, rare animals could live on kentucky that would make a stange noise that was undescribealbe? i have lived here all of mi life and i have heard many manyu different animals, like coyotes, bobcats, owls, and other wild animals that have distinctive calls. the frequency changed during this hour period of time listening to this unidentifiable animal i at once saw its eyes glowing in the light reflecting back at me it semed to be atleast four to five foot . which seemed to me to be un real for around here.. recently a bearhas been spotted in the area but i have heared bears before and i do not think that this was a bear. my two dogs were afraid of this "animal" very much they always bark at things that are unfamiliar to them.. but one just started to howl as soon as it senced it the other ran throuhg the yard and stopped as it watch in to the woods and braked crazily until she became too scared and ran back to the house begging to come in... then when i saw the eyes ((which were may be 10 feet from my dog that was tied up, that was howling in the beginig)) seh was dead quiet and still i did not see her i believe that she may have been hiding.. so i hope that i have provided enough descriptions for you and that u can help me figure this out because i would really like to know wat that was in my yard.. thanx for your time. plz get back with me as soon as posible *a.l.*

Answer
Dear a.l.

Thank you for your question and for trying to describe an animal by its call, especially as your dogs were scared at the time.

I think that your mystery animal is the eastern puma or cougar (Puma/Felis concolor couguar). This is an endangered animal, but is occasionally found in Kentucky. The body length is 1.05-1.96 m long, so fits your estimate of being at least 4-5 foot long. It is usually silent, but has many kinds of calls, including growls, hisses and shrill, piercing, bird-like whistles. In the mating season, it may make very loud screams, likened to a woman's scream, which would be enough to scare your dogs. There are occasional reports of pumas attacking humans, but pumas usually avoid people.

I hope that this has answered your question. You are lucky to have heard such an endangered animal, even if your dogs would probably not agree with me.

All the best

Jonathan
