Question We found a baby jack rabit about 3 hours ago. He/she is no bigger than a small orange and appaears to be healthy and well (just nervous) ... I realize now it would be best to just put it back where we found it but a few hours have passed... will it still be okay to put it back? also, it was my dad that found it, i dont know the exact location of where it was found so we have to wait till he comes home. the bunny is currently in a box with alot of grass/dirt/twigs and some water... that wont effect it in anyway would it? I am just worried its mother wont find it and/or something else will and eat/hurt it...how can i avoid that? =[
Answer Hello Julia.
Yes, you should indeed put the rabbit back. It will probably still be accepted by its family. Put it near the place where your found it, but out of the way of obvious harm (big dogs, lawn mowers, cars, etc.). If after many hours the rabbit has not been acknowledged by its family, but they are aware of it, take it to a wildlife rehabber or an animal shelter. That is the best way to help it, as they are very difficult to take care of unless you have the proper training.
Wildlife, especially baby wildlife, can be very cute, but should be left alone. 9 out of 10 times, the parents are very near, or the animal is faring well on its own. You should never take an animal out of the wild unless you are 100% sure it would die otherwise.
Your heart, and your dad's, is in the right place, but please put a little more thought before you act. Keep up the good work though!
