Wildlife/Crab claws

Question
Dear David,

I am hoping you can verify a possible fact we have heard regarding the strength of a crabs claws. I have heard (cannot remember where from - hopefully not urban myth !) that a crab can bend a small coin with its claws.  I am not sure if this is the kind of question that you answer, researching possible myth - however - i figured you may know if it was impossible and therefore purely a tale.
Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Vanessa,

Sorry for the delayed response, I didn't receive your initial  question in my email until today.  I haven't specifically heard about a crab bending a coin, but I would say it is most definitely possible.  Some crabs (ie stone crab) are capable of exerting 14,000 lbs/sq. inch with their claws.  Compare this with an average human strength of 150lbs/sq. inch or a wolf jaw exerting 1500lbs/sq. inch and you get an idea of how strong the crab's claw really is.  If you ever want to test in for yourself, watch your fingers!

Cheers,
David
