Hi David

I went on to Google to try and identify the insect I saw this lunchtime the middle of Wiltshire.

Having seen your pic's. it was definitely a Hummingbird Moth  -  so distinctive with that big body / tapering head / long tongue darting into the flowers and the orange lower part of the wings which I commented on at the time as resembling a Hummingbird.

I saw a Hummingbird Moth in my garden feeding on a Verbena on 17th September 2009. We live in South West Scotland. What an amazing little creature!
