Wildlife/Tiger vs Lion: Who wins?

killa wrote at 2006-08-22 09:51:08
First of all lions are king of the jungle. Second of all they are eager to fight. It is said that majority of tigers are intimitated by lions. A fight with a lion is a fight till the end. Lions travel in prides and when it comes to survival in the savanah tigers would not stand a chance. Lions range in size and a 550 pound lion would demolish any tiger in its path. Lions spend there time training to become the ultimate predator where tigers just hunt and eat. Tigers have more weight but lions are more musculiar and have bigger shoulders.

A tiger (pantheratigris) is a very strong cat. I have seen videos of tigers beating lions as well as videos of lions beating tigers. I have spent 1 year reserching on tigers. Tigers are more agile, stronger and more powerful. I think the tiger would win in a fair fight between these 2 beasts.

A full grown male tiger has a slight size advantage over a male lion, but size is not always the deciding factor in a fight.

A male lion's main lot in life is to fight plain and simple. The lion's mane is there to keep other predators specifically male lions from being able to attack the throat.

If a lion and tiger were to fight, in my opinion the lion would be the victor. No doubt the tiger would damn near kill the lion, but a male lion lives his entire life fighting. A male tiger is a solitary hunter, he is not built to fight or defend. He is built to hunt.

Hi Gentlemen,

I have been searching an answer for this question for long and every where I found one of the two inching ahead. There is no clear-cut or unanimous opinion on this issue. I personally believe that Tiger is ahead of Lion in claiming no. 1 spot.

When we discuss such a fighting scene, it is never taken into consideration(though written) that tiger is an ambush hunter, so, there can be two scenarios.

1. Head on fight where  the two are face to face, more like African habitat. Here, you can compare the strengths and weakness of the two big ones with Reasoning.

2. If it is a dense forest i.e. a pro-tiger habitat , then a Tiger is way ahead of lion.

Also , we have stories of Bengal Tigers killing Bull elephants but never heard of a Lion taking down an elephant on its own.

May be, I repeat may be, some of the lesser sub-species of Tiger fell short on expectations but in general Tiger out weighs Lion.

Auto, the lion spends its entire life fighting, and the tiger spends its entire life hunting. Think about what requires more skill. Fights in a pride are a blind fury, filled with paw swipes ONLY to the head. While this is effective (somewhat), imagine what the tiger has learned over the course of its lifetime. The tiger is a stalker, and therefore wants to end a hunt efficiently. This means attacking areas of the body not to wear it down, or to simply stun it, but to kill it, cripple it, and make it helpless. This means that in any environment, even a pro-lion environment (i.e. vast plain), the tiger is superior. Why? Because while the lion is using all of its power and energy swatting away at a strong skull, the tiger is using less effort to deal more damage slicing away at internal organs, or dealing quick and sharp blows to areas of the head that will stun on contact. Sometimes fighting isn't all you need to become a good fighter, fighting requires (strangely) patience and cleverness.

Tigers are not purely solitary animals.A male tiger usually have a territory which is big enough to accomodate 5-7 female tiger territories, and all those female tigers are under his protection. No other male tigers are tolerated in this territory  or the intruding tiger has to defeat or kill the resident tigerto take over the territory.Tigers also have to do a great deal of fighting to defend their territories

In your answer you have mentioned strong forepaws of Lion,If you observe any photos it will be clear that Tiger's fore paws are more muscularly built,so that it can hold on to and bring down massive preys like gaurs(average wt- 1200kg).Second thing is that the Tiger usually hunts single and it has a habit of dragging/carrying its kill to a safe place before eating. If the kill is caught by neck then it would be a drag, otherwise it will hold by gripping on the back, half lift it then it carries the kill to a place which can even be miles away from the hunting ground.Jim Corbett in his book have mentioned about tigers which killed and carried his bait buffaloes to above 2 or 3 miles that also through thick vegetation. That itself says how strong the animal is.Regarding fighting experience,Tigers also have territories which they defend from other tigers. They fight over territories food and females. Some Tigers like lions are known to kill all the cubs of the resident male after killing or driving away the resident male & taking over the territory. We dont see or hear much about Tigers since there are only few left & their habitat is quite different from that of Lions. It is easy to see a lion if you go for a safari,It doesnt matter whether  you are in africa or in Gujarat,India(Gir). They live in Savannahs. But Tigers live in deep jungles,Its difficult to see them and know about them.

[There are a lot of variation in the figures found online. I tried to collect them from reputed instituion and/or govt sources]

Largest Siberian Tiger found in the wild : 845 lbs/ 384 kg.

Longest Siberian Tiger found in the wild: 129/ 3.9 m

Largest Bengal Tiger found in the wild: 857 lbs/ 389 kg. 3.22 m 10 ft 7 in between pegs (3.37 m 11ft over the curves)

(The largest tiger ever held in captivity, and the heaviest enatural big catf on record, is a nine-year-old male Siberian named eJaipurf, owned by animal trainer Joan Byron-Marasek of Clarksburg, New Jersey, USA. This tiger measured 3.32 m 10 ft 11in in total length and weiged 423 kg 932 lb in October 1986)

Average size (mode) of Siberian Tigers living in the wild: 550 lbs (250 kg) and 11/ 3.35 m

Average size (mode) of Bengal Tigers living in the wild: 500 lbs (227 kg) and 96/ 2.9 m (Bengal tigers have a slightly shorter tail than the Siberians)

** The Bengal Tigers have the longest canines **

Largest Lion in captivity: 806 lbs (366 kg)

Largest Lion found in the wild: 702 lbs (318 kg) and 11 (3.35 m)

Average size (mode) of African Lion: 410 lbs (186 kg) and 810 (2.7 m)

** Lions stand around 1.2m (including mane) at shoulder as opposed to 1m of a tiger **

[Compare the big cats with the big bears: Polar Bears average 1200 lbs/ 82 (544 kg/ 2.5 m. Largest recorded is 2210 lbs) while Kodiaks (Brown Bear) average 720 lbs/ 76 (327 kg/ 2.3 m. Largest recorded is 2512 lbs) at the end of the feeding season. Grizzlys (Brown Bear) average 530 lbs (nearly the same as Siberian Tigers).]

looking at the body structure we can easily say that tiget is more muscular and evenly build.

Other important thing is that tiger deals with lot of competition throughout its life. Wild dog, Leopards, Bears and are up against him for every hunt. Lion never faces such things because they hunt in prides and I have never heard that a lion pride was attacked by any other predating species. Tiger is solitary and before every fight it calculates the possibility and the wisest way to get away with minimum risk because there is no one to feed or to take care, if it gets hurt.

For swipes on head, I must say that a tiger can stand tall on hind limbs and deliver swipes with its bigger paws.

It is not just a matter of brawn but also brain. Tiger is a cunning cat, a very good learner and the master of stealth.

because of tigers being stalkers and ambushers, that basically proves they don't like combat, lion have a more powerful bite than a tiger, lions aren't more aggressive they are more sociable but in a fight between them the lion would come out on top they are brought up to fight, plus it is highly unlikely the tiger would find the neck through the lions main, so its more difficult for the tiger to give its killing bite

I don't think so.because a lion has a mane that protect it and all big cats go for the neck and it maybe be a exellent fight but lion will go for the neck of the tiger and it will be over

I've read a lot of the articles.  After careful thought and consideration, I've come to this conclusion.

If the lion and the tiger both faced off in a 1 on 1 duel to the death....they would both fight ferociously, they would both seriously hurt each other, and they would both crawl away from each other and die.  Simultaneously.

I think the lion would die first.  Which, I suppose, means the tiger would win?

All throughout a lions life, I believe it's only known enemy in Africa is the Hyena.  But seriously, a Hyena vs. a Lion is a mis-match.

Tiger's are the more 'athletic' cat, and will get the job done.  Then die, after fighting a lion.

jhun wrote at 2008-07-30 00:32:34
in every situation, physical or even intellectual duel, there has to be a strategy... a tactical battle plan... us, humans won't win a fight without a strategy... so as the cats... unlike the lion, a tiger is a very tactical cat... they use the surrounding for their own advantage, stalk the target in stealth then ambush... lions just use their numbers and assault head on... an indication of lack in intelligence...

tigers comes on top because their tactical and smart... not to mention their size and strenght... intelligence plus strenght plus size is equal to a one mean killing machine... and that killing machine is the tiger...

David Stringer wrote at 2008-08-18 09:12:30
I have had a lot of "who would win in a fight" questions, but surprisingly this is the first tiger vs. lion Q.  I am highly opposed to any animals actually fighting unless outside of completely natural situations, but as I assume this is all hypothetical, here's my take...

Given the physical and behavioural attributes of both cats, it is indeed a difficult question as they are both built killing machines.  As per your points above, it is debatable if the lion is more aggressive, but it generally does have more fighting experience.  Male lions often must fight off other lions challenging for the pride, as well as other predatory animals on the African plains.  Although lionesses do a large majority of the hunting, males are very good hunters too (young, individual lions manage to hunt on their own until they find a pride of their own).

Tigers are solitary animals and are more of a stalker than the lion (ie, they creep up and pounce on prey).  So compared to a lion with strong forepaws, the tiger has very strong hindlegs for pouncing.

Overall, I would peg their strength as being approximately equal, so I will give the edge to tigers on agility.  They are both highly successful cats, but the overall stamina and movement of the tiger will come out on top.

However, tigers live alone and lions live in packs. Tigers are known how to solo. But lions are more alike to cooperative. So i think the tiger would have the advantage.

ajay wrote at 2009-04-14 19:17:56
well in this case no a lion would win because a lion has better agilities stamina and experience from a tiger has many features like sharp clawed nails but comparing overall a lion would definitely win in the q u had asked so in some cases a lion would win but if u were to ask overall no would actually know because there might be a better habitat for the lion to win or the tiger to be in a herd so depends on the case of how many there are or the environment.

Sandi wrote at 2010-01-29 09:55:54
Now realistically speaking i Love Tigers and these cats are very strong, tactical, and are as quick as the Lions but on the other hand lions are used on fair fights and can easily intimidate any wild animal with its courage and ability to attack on a 1 on 1 situation. so yes tigers are bigger but lions have more courage and its just in their nature...

Lawrn wrote at 2010-03-18 11:16:26
Even though hypothetical to believe, something comes to our mind are Lion's - Courage, aggressiveness, getting tired quicker, majesty, etc. Similarly for Tigers's  - Hideous, stamina, etc. While on a one to one fight I presume some advantages of each of these are equalled. For example, lions getting tired soon, it is mostly the environment, especially African savannahs where they have to take the severe heat and so gets exhausted soon. Similarly tiger a bit coward or hideous is again to its environ deep/dense jungles where it is a place to attack from behind and take down. However in an open turf both these are equalled. Strength, aggressiveness, courage, fighting skills all counts and it could vary from Lion to lion and tiger to tiger. On an overall thought process I could visualise an aggressive ion and tiger both are of equal match in an open turf, but nobody will be able to kill, but looking at the mind of a lion it won't budge the scene, whereas a tiger might try to avoid a foreseeable defeat.

In my opinion the lion would tear the tiger apart. The lion has the jaw of death and has the mindset of a true killer. One up to the lions. roaarrrr.

tiger is the most powerful cat on earth they can down any prey put in front of him even indian gaur and elephants are known to hurts by these magnificent creature. if the question is this who will win a fight i will surely go with the tigers this answer is not only spoken by me, our history shows it very clearly, about 100 out of 93 times tigers defeated lion in roman arena, yeah.. it is the same place where gladiators are forced to fight until their death. similarly tigers also fight for their life in the arena, i also wants to tell u that tigers kill larger prey such as gaur alone mind it wthout any help whereas lions needs their whole pride to kill a cape buffalo, this u can see in every video of lion killing buffalo, one more facts is also with tiger as we know tigeris aanimal like to live alone while on the other side lions live in a pride, think for a while if alion is injured they can feed on the meat killed by their pride but if tigers is injured they have nothing to do they cannot live their life depending on others they live on the jungle self handedly. that is why tigers are the king of jungle king of beast and also the lord of all animals

Here's some historical artifact's, that are "mostly" in museum's, who are from people that witness'ed the lion's an tiger's clashing from India, Rome, China to Britian. All having the same result''s, I found only 1 for the tiger's side but its so faded, that you cant tell if its a lion he's fighting an if you have documented artifact's of the tiger please post them, because I'm having a hard time finding any at all for the tiger, which almost look's like a blow out win for the lion...

The lion has been given the title "King" from mostly every part of world, even asian's once had the lion as a majestic "King" an build ten's of thousand's of statue's for the lion but, unfortuantely they went to war with Britain, as Britain having a "Lion" already on there flag, they condoled the tiger to opose Britain's flag. Hense another reason they eradicated asitic lion's to almost extinction, threw religous an ploitical reason's for the better survival amoung's lion's, of there new symbol of power, the "Tiger".

The Lion also had been dubed "King" for thousand's of year's, from there native orginated land's, "Indian's, an African's" by being the top predator, that has account's of killing any and every opposing threat, threw single Brute power or threw "Unity" that is unequal by any other animal on earth.

Again I dont mind that you choose the tiger over the lion, for I love tiger's as well, but I do mind if your a lion "Hater". So dont make bullshit claim's, because it will only reflect on who you are, a coward, the truth will never degrade you, so when posting be "Honest".

An to Marko, leave your email so I can email you the blue print answer sheet that show's how much accounts lied on. He present's 360 account's, yet if you even read all of them, you would have processed the 330 accounts he.. #1 he lied an changed the wording's from real document's #2 Listed only opinion's, not actual fight's #3 Repeated the same account more than 50 time's. I have myself made an blue print answer sheet, you can read where I mixed an matched exactly what number's are the bullshit an repeated accounts from.

In perspective Tiger is more powerful than lion.

1) Tiger can fight on two legs with superb balance , where as a lion has cant and this imbalance is great disadvantage in a fight to death

2) With two limbs balanced a tiger with remaining free 2 limbs can give quick and continuous heavy blows to the head like kung fu style where as the lion cannot use 2 limbs at same time and it cannot even hit the head of tiger as the limbs of a lion will hit only till shoulders. And intelligent people knows 2 is better than 1.

Stop debating, there'll be no end to this discussion, except we find a tiger, an a lion, don't feed them for 3 weeks and put them in a cage.. and repeat with another tiger and lion until we got solid conclusion.

And by any means IT'S NOT RIGHT to do it.

Actually God is pretty fair by putting them in a seperated area,so they don't kill each other..

Who's the king of the jungle ??

Both are king of their own jungle.. They're on the top of the food chain wherever they are..

Until we human, come and kill them for their coat, or burn their habitat to make a real estate..

So, if we really do love tiger and lion, quit debating who's winning in a fight, and start to support the preserving of their habitat, etc..

Because without change,  in the next 20 - 50 years, there's a big chance , our grandchildren will only know them as legend, history.. Just like some species of the tiger which are now 100% extinct, because of the destroyed habitat.

So neither lion nor tiger kill each other.. I'd rather say, we human are killing them and we don't stop until they're no more.. and it's wrong !!

1-Black and white film tiger lion fight. Tiger loose retreats lion running after.

2-Black and white film lion wins, run after tiger, tiger laid down injured or died.

3-Jingle Jim black and white movie lion winner run after tiger

4- Black and white film Sub adult male lion with little mane defeat tiger, again lion run after tiger

5- 1929 black and white film Gir forest old lion kill tiger

First found the whole scene clean images versions. In the Big Cage scenes in few occasions the tiger tried to escaped but the lion ran often him. In nature when a tiger face serious opposition he retreats. The tiger (s) did the same. He  knew he could not defeat and sense his life was in danger. A frame by frame examination on versions that have clear images, shows in a few occasions, the tiger retained momentarily the lion on the grown by his mane. Details of this scene was lather explained in the newspapers (The Milwaukee journal July 18, 1962 ). The black mane lion face not one put three tigers in a row. The lion killed so fasts the first and second tigers that they did not have enough footage. A third tiger was send and the male lion still had enough of energy in him. If I remember correctly, the last tiger tried to escape too. The keepers manages to stop the fight when the lion was held down by his mane again. Now all 4 performing male big cats used by Beatty were born in the wild and were in top shape.

See guys, please do careful research. Everyone supporting lions say the same thing, that a lion's mane would protect it from a tiger's bite. But tigers can crunch up fully grown tortoises like they were nothing. Now, a mane is just a mass of hair. What is hair compared to a tough shell of the tortoise? Tigers have such powerful canines that mane is just no protection.

And yes, the tiger is far more powerful than a lion. It regularly takes on prey six to seven times its own size. And a tiger has stronger muscles, too. The largest type of cattle prey on Earth, the Indian Gaur, can be taken single-handedly by tigers. Those cattle are normally 5 to 6 times larger than tigers. But even the smaller African bison requires 3 to 4 lionesses (the pride males rarely hunt).

And because the lion doesn't hunt, its strength isn't kept up anyways.

The tiger has evolved to be stronger. It hasn't got bunch of other guys to hunt for the pride. Its every tiger for itself.

Tiger's the mighty king.
