About Jesse H.
Expertise
I have been working with Windows 2000 for the last 2 years. I know a lot of shortcuts; some are specific to Windows 2000 and most work with other versions of Windows, too. I am working in the Windows registry almost on a daily basis, so I can help with configurations, too.

Windows 2000 - Hyperlink on desktop backrounds

Expert: Jesse H. - 7/30/2006

Question
Hello Again Jesse,
Sorry to bother you again. I got your last email, which told me what to do, but i can't write codes. When I tried your sample, i could not click on it, like you can on Microsoft Word, and there was all this other writing around it, and a white box. I do not know what to do, so could you please give me a different sample, or some step by step instructions. Otherwise you could send a attackment to my email address. Thanks,
Conrad

Hi Jesse,
I am having trouble with my desktop backround. I was wondering if you can put a hyperlink onto a desktop backround? It is a site that i use almost constantly, and i would like a quick acess button. And no sorry i would not like a bookmark. I am not THAT computer illiterate.
Thanks
Conrad

Answer -
Hi, Conrad!

Yes, you can put a hyperlink on your background.  You will need to have Active Desktop activated, though.  I believe that it is on by default, so unless you have purposely turned it off, then you should be okay.

First, you will need to create your own HTML file.  It can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be.  The one that I created to test this looks like this:

================
<html>
 <body>
   <br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/>
   <center><a href="http://www.yahoo.com">My Website</a><center>
 </body>
</html>
================

You can copy and paste this into a new text file and then rename the file to background.html.  Right-click on the desktop and select the Properties option.  On the Desktop tab, click on the "Browse..." button.  Browse to the background.html file that you just created, select it, and click the Open button.  Click the Apply button, followed by the OK button.  You should now see the link on your desktop.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Sincerely,
Jesse

Answer
Hi, Conrad!

Copy the sample I gave from the "<html>" to the "</html>" (i.e. do not copy the "================" lines, those were there to separate the sample from my text).  Right-click on the desktop and hover over the New option.  When the New submenu pops up, select the "Text Document" option.  Double-click on the new document to open it and paste in the sample that you just copied.  Save and close the document.  Right-click on the document and select the "Rename" option.  Type "background.html" and hit enter.  Then follow the instructions I gave you previously to set your background to this file.

If this still doesn't work, then the problem is probably that you do not see file extensions.  Let me know what the full name of the file was before you changed it to "background.html".  I'll then give you some more steps to make it so that you can see the extensions.

Sincerely,
 Jesse
